Obedience - what does that look like?
Obedience means - compliance with a command. Obedience may be voluntary or involuntary. Voluntary obedience alone can be acceptable to God. Abstaining from what is prohibited.
These are a few things that I came across when looking up what Obedience means.
Over this last while Holy Spirit has been working with me on my obedience to Him. Obeying His promptings as He shows me and not putting other things first.
When I was out posting the last Newsletter through the doors of my street, I looked down an alleyway and saw a person sitting on the ground. Instantly, I thought to go and chat to this person to see if they were okay. Instead of doing that I finished posting the last 3 Newsletters through the doors as that was the last three houses I had to do to finish the job. When I walked back to the lane that person was gone. This really caused me to see that I put finishing that job first before being obedient to what Holy Spirit had wanted me to do.
I would be a finisher in nature, if I start a job I would keep going until I got it finished even if it mean’t working through the night. Years ago when I started to paint a room, I would have to finish it and would work through the night to do it.
So when I found that that person had gone it really hit home to me. What if that person had been suicidal, or needed some kind of help? I will never know, because I had delayed doing what I had been shown to do.
I know in the past I have been woken to pray in the middle of the night, and have tried to pray but fell back to sleep or just turned over and ignored that prompting.
After this incident of the alleyway I have been very conscious of being obedient to the prompting of Holy Spirit and doing what He wants me to do straight away without delay.
There could be a time when it could be life threatening, so its time to listen and obey. Practicing it in my everyday life, focusing my mind on things above and having a listening ear to His voice.
John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.
Proverbs 1:7. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Colossians 3:2. Set your mind on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.
I repented of my disobedience, for not being obedient and acting promptly to His direction.
This reminds me of when I was a teenager, I had been left at home alone, the rest of my family had left to spend the weekend at the caravan, I had not wanted to go with them. I was spending the day alone, I started to feel an urgency and kept hearing ‘he’s coming back, he’s coming back’. I kept hearing it that I eventually took notice and asked a friend to stay over for a couple of nights. My father had been sexually abusing me and this was the Lord speaking with an urgency for me to take action. My father did come back, but because I acted on that prompting nothing happened to me that weekend. If I had not acted then I would have been home alone with him with no-one to help me. Back then I did not know who was speaking to me, but I understand now and I am so grateful and thankful to the Lord.
Holy Spirit is always speaking, but we are not always listening. As we spend time with the Lord, in His Word, communing with Him, praying, talking, asking, listening, doing, you start to become more aware of Him in your life. He wants to help you in all aspects of your life.
Recently, I did not know what to wear for an occasion, and the day before Holy Spirit showed me what I was to wear. The outfit was just perfect and I had not time wasted trying on different outfits to see what would do. This is what I mean by every small detail.
I encourage you to become quiet before the Lord, spend time getting to know Him, building your relationship with Him. Most importantly be obedient to His promptings to His guidance, you will be blessed. There is nothing that can encourage you more than doing what He shows you and seeing the results of being obedient to His small still voice. Draw close to Him and He will draw close to you!
John 14:26. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to our remembrance all that I have said to you.
Love Denise
